It’s everyone’s favorite seasonal beverage. The one most of us crave once the weather gets chillier, and the leaves start turning color. Of course, we’re referring to Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte. The coffee drink is so popular that it was released in the summer this year, appearing at stores by the end of August.
Before you take that first sip — or another one — you might want to know exactly what you’re drinking. Specifically, just how many calories and grams of fat you’re consuming in a single Tall or Venti cup.
According to a report by Consumer Affairs, when you order the 20-oz Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte with the works, meaning whole milk and whipped cream, you’re consuming 510 calories, 21 grams of fat, and 66 grams of carbs.
In order to burn that off, the report reveals you’d need to perform 54 minutes of burpees (!!) or jog for 4.6 miles.
How else might you expend those 500+ calories? According to FitnessBlender.com, playing about an hour of racquetball, 40 minutes of rock climbing, and 120 minutes of belly dancing will do the trick.
Even a “healthier” PSL isn’t much better. Ordering a 12-oz Tall PSL with nonfat milk and no whipped cream adds up to 200 calories, 0 grams of fat and 29 grams of carbs.
In order to burn that off, Consumer Affairs shares you’d have to do burpees for 21 minutes or jog for 1.6 miles.
“Or, think of it this way,” says the report. “To burn off the 200 calories of the smaller, non-fat seasonal favorite you’d have to take the stairs to the 20th floor of the Olympic Tower in Manhattan, but to burn off the larger, fattier option you’d have to climb all the way to the top, 51st floor.”
That’s a lot of stairs.
While die-hard PSL lovers might be hesitant to totally forgo their coffee treat, there are a few additional ways to make it healthier.
Ordering a Short PSL with almond milk without whipped cream adds up to only 120 calories, 3 grams of fat, and 21 grams of carbs. According to EverydayHealth.com, using an elliptical machine for 24 minutes, a 22-minute hike, and playing soccer for 19 minutes easily burns 150 calories, which means you’ll torch that Short PSL and then some.
Another option to cut back on the calories is to request fewer pumps of the pumpkin spice syrup. One pump of the sweet stuff adds up to 33 calories and 5 grams of sugar.
Or, you could make your own organic pumpkin spice latte at home. This recipe uses real canned pumpkin and organic sugar, which cuts back on the calories and the amount of minutes at the gym.
Sorry, Starbucks.
